Tourist Info
| Transportation: Metro is pretty convenient and clean - a good way to get downtown and not have to worry about driving (and parking!) in the city. Silver Spring is about a 30 minute ride to downtown. | |
| The National Mall and Monuments |
You definitely should take a look at the Monuments around the Mall. Metro: Smithsonian. See the Washington Monument, Jefferson Memorial, and Lincoln Memorial. Also check out the new WWII Memorial. |
| Smithsonian Museums |
Check out the (free!!) Smithsonian Museums while you are here. Close metro stops: L'Enfant Plaza or Smithsonian on the Orange/Blue Lines. Our favorites are the Air and Space Museum, the National Museum of Natural History, and the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden. |
| National Zoo |
The National Zoo is another good way to spend part of a day. Metro: Woodley Park Zoo or Cleveland Park. Check out the recent addition: Tai "Butterstick" Shan! You might try to get some viewing tickets ahead of time to get a better view! |
| Rock Creek Park |
Rock Creek Park is a nice place to go for a hike or jog or have a picnic. The more northern reaches are just to the west of Silver Spring. |
| Great Falls |
If you have a car and you like to walk around/hike/picnic, Great Falls is highly recommended. It provides a fantastic view of the Potomac River. Check out the Patowmack Canal, which was used to connect trade all the way to the Ohio Valley! Take a ride on an old-fashioned canal boat! |
| Eastern Market | Eastern Market is a fun place to spend a lazy Sunday morning. There are tons of local craftspeople and vendors there with jewelry, photographs, art, furniture, clothes, etc. There are several coffee shops and restaurants nearby that have great brunch! Metro: Eastern Market |
